Many of our scholarship students attend school in this town.

Post by Nola Nackerud in Condega, Nicaragua

Each March, near the beginning of our school year, Elisa and I meet with the new and continuing Asla Scholarship students. Our new scholarship students were very excited with anticipation for their new school year.  It’s always wonderful to see the continuing students again and to see how far they have come since they started with the Asla Foundation.  Most of the new and continuing students still are studying during this difficult time of Covid 19, mostly on Saturdays.  They seem to be taking precautions by using masks and social distancing in the classroom.

The situation here in Condega with the virus is becoming very serious.  Even though the government has no restrictions, most people are finally using masks and social distancing, or at least they are aware of the reality of the situation. So far there have been 3 deaths from the virus here in Condega and several teachers are now sick.  The public schools are still open, but many parents are choosing not to send their children, and some universities are having classes online.  One of the high schools (Instituto Marista) has closed and is trying to do classes online as best as they can, but not all students have internet and a computer so that presents other problems.

The virus is just getting started here, and I fear that it will get much worse.  I have all the letters from the students ready to send, but at this time there are no international flights in or out of Nicaragua which is why you have not received your letters yet.  All of us here appreciate all of your support, your kindness, and generosity.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Take care and be well!
